I had a miscarriage two weeks ago. I am doing fine, but I was really shocked by it. My doctor has already told me what I need to know about miscarriage but I want to know more. What are the causes of miscarriage and when can I start planning another baby? Thanks

I am really sorry for your loss, I hope that everything is ok with you now. There are many reasons that can cause a woman to miscarry but there can also be no reason. Sometimes it was just ment to be. The risk of miscarriage decreases as the pregnancy progresses and it is believed that more than 50% of pregnancies miscarry before the implantation in the womb occurs. There are some things that can contribute to pregnancy loss like multiple pregnancies, smoking during pregnancy, taking drugs and alcohol, fever over 100F, scleroderma, uncontrolled diabetes, maternal age etc. It is important not to blame yourself, because sometimes there is nothing you can do to prevent it. When it comes to planning another pregnancy, there is no good or bad time. It is up to couple to decide, but it is usually recommended to wait after a first period. In any case, there is no reason not to make love if you feel like doing it. Eating healthy, exercising regularly and reducing stress are some things that improve chances for long-term fertility.
