Asthma is a chronic disease of the airways. It causes symptoms like coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and chest tightness. Although the symptoms may decrease over time with medical treatment, the disease is not curable.

Researchers from the Netherlands and Scotland found that mother’s behaviour in pregnancy could decrease the risks of asthma in their children later in life. They found that those women who eat apples in pregnancy decrease the children’s chances of this incurable disease.

The researchers followed dietary habits of 2,000 women in their pregnancies and examined the effects of the maternal diet on airway development in more than 1,200 of their children five years later. The results revealed that the children of mothers who ate apples had significantly reduced risk of developing asthma and accompanied symptoms.
