Effectiveness of birth control the first month.

Hi, i have extremely irregular periods and i was prescribed Ortho Tri-Cyclen. The doctor told me to start taking them the next sunday because of my irregularity i probably wouldnt get my period for another 3 or 4 months anyway. I was wondering if the pill would be effective on birth control after the first week of use even if i started the pack on the closest sunday.
