My father is 62 years old and he likes to eat a lot. Several days ago, after the big meal, something odd happened. He felt sharp and strong pain in umbilical area, that went from left ribs to the back. He sweated a lot and vomited. He complained on the strong pain in abdominal area. Doctor said that my father has elevated lipase levels. What is that and why it is happening?
Lipase is an enzyme from esteraza class. This enzyme is created in pancreas and it performs its function in duodenum. Here he divides fat to fat acids. Activity of lipase is increased in the case if acute pancreatitis which is most likely your father's case. Acute pancreatitis is a very serious condition, that could end fatally, and the level of lipase is the main symptom of damaged pancreas.
