I have a nine years old daughter who has had four bladder infections over a five months period. She becomes very ill, although the medicine prescribed by her doctor works immediately. After some testing, it was indicating an enlarged kidney. Her doctor recommended more testing, but we do not know what to expect. Can anyone give us some causes of an enlarged kidney, because we actually do not understand why this happened to her?

If her doctor diagnosed her with enlarged kidney, he should determine what is enlarged. It could be that kidney tissue itself, what makes the urine, is larger than normal. Beside this, collecting system, which collects the urine and transports it to the bladder, could be enlarged. Usually, enlargement refers to the collecting system. Kidney enlarging can be due to many causes. The greatest concern is whether the dilation is due to a partial obstruction in drainage system. Another cause can be backflow of the urine from the bladder to the kidney. Some other causes can be abnormal bladder function such as infrequent voiding patterns. Some cases were because excessive avoiding related to an overactive bladder. I hope her doctor will discover with further testing exact cause of her kidney enlarging. After this, he will sure be able to perform the best treatment to your daughter.
