An experiment that a few doctors conducted slightly before some children underwent tonsillectomies showed that enlarged tonsils may be to blame for the child’s sleeping problem at night. In addition, this disrupted sleep often leads to behavioral problems during the day affecting the child’s memory, attention, concentration and mood.

Doctors report that enlarge tonsils may interfere with sleep by getting in the way of the air supply at night. Snoring as well could be a sign of breathing problems.

Enlarged tonsils and adenoids also cause sleep apnea that is often repaired by undergoing a tonsillectomy. Sleep apnea is a condition in which the throat closes during sleep.
Doctors told her that her enlarged tonsils getting in the way of her air supply at night.

Two groups of children were tested: one group was supposed to undergo tonsillectomies and another group was to undergo unrelated surgeries. The children in the tonsillectomy group were more likely to suffer from sleep disorders and accompanied behavioral problems as well as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder a.k.a ADHD. Testing of the children for the tonsillectomy a year later showed they had no or less sleeping problems.

Researchers are applying to doctors and parents to check for their children’s tonsils and adenoids before giving them any therapies and strong drugs for their sleeping disorders and behavioral problems.
