Hi, I need more information on Eustachian tubes test, because I will have one in two days. How is it performed? And what can be diagnosed by this test?

There are many tests for evaluating the function of the eustachian tube. Several tests can be easily performed like the Valsalva test, the Toynbee test, the Politzer test, and eustachian tube catheterization. The Valsalva test is done by visual checking during a forced expiration, with the mouth closed and the nose occluded by the thumb and forefinger. The test is positive when an intact tympanic membrane is moving, or if air can be heard through a perforated TM. The Politzer test is performed by visual inspection of the tympanic membrane while performing a special procedure. When positive, the overpressure that develops in the nasopharynx is transmitted to the middle ear, and only indicates an anatomically patent ET tube. The Politzer and Valsalva test may be useful as a temporary treatment high negative middle ear pressure.
