Excessive Blood Clots During Menses

Not really sure how to ask this question, but here goes. First, I am in my early 40's, so I am not sure if my problem could be related to being pre-menalpause. At any rate, I have noticed some serious clotting during my menses--the clotting is very thick. I see heavy thick clots every time I go to the bathroom. The clots are either in the toilet or on the tissue or both. Is this something I need to be concerned about?
