Scientists who examined the effects of exercise and dieting in elderly people suggest that those looking to lose weight and were unsure about which way to choose should definitely go for cardio workout room instead of counting calories.

In the study that looked at benefits from dieting and exercising, both groups managed to lose weight but while the exercisers maintained their strength and muscle mass and increased aerobic capacity the dieters besides extra pounds also lost muscle mass, strength and aerobic capacity.

Although the researchers suggest exercising before dieting, it doesn’t mean that the exercisers should increase their food intake.

The study performed to check for differences and benefits of exercise and dieting on weight loss included healthy 50- to 60-year olds whose body mass index was between 23 and 30. Out of 34 participants, 18 dieted and 16 exercised to lose weight.

The groups’ goals were to reduce their calorie consumption and increase calories’ burnout by 16 percent the first three months, and by 20 percent the next nine months.

Both dieters and exercisers managed to lose 9 - 10 percent of their total body weight. Those who worked out 90 minutes a day took vs those who had 60 minutes of cardiovascular activity lost more pounds – 15 to 20 percent of their body weight.

Although the exercises showed to be more effective in the study, people should not forget about the benefits they would get from dieting. Eating healthy and properly reduces the risks of diseases and is effective against weight gain.
