Eyelid is swollen and possibly infected- hard to open eye. I

My friend from work had an infected eye two days ago. When I saw her at work the next day, her eye gland was infected and her eyelid was swollen. I came home from work that day just fine, but then later that evening, my eye was sore. The next mornig, I did not go to work because my eye was exactly like my friend's was. Do you think this virus is contagious or the whole incident is just a major coincident?
