What is the risk of development of febrial seizures in children? I avoid giving unneeded medications to my 3 years old son, but am concerned about consequences of high body temperature. How can it be recognized and stopped? How common are they? Please post.

Fever-induced seizures called febrile seizures are relatively rare and occur in 1 out of 100 children. They are not considered epilepsy. Febrile seizure may occur not only when child’s body temperature is rising, but also when it is coming down. Always have acetaminophen suppositories and if needed suppositories with children’s doses of diazepam. Using them in treatment of increased body temperature prevents development of seizures.
