Hi. My grandpa had a stroke. He can`t swallow his food safely and I am simply not sure what to do. His doctor has recommended feeding tubes. He said early tube feeding reduces deaths in stroke patients who have difficulties with swallowing. What about PEG?
Hi. There are different ways in which food can be delivered into the stomach by the tube, and every method has its` advantages and disadvantages. Some patients prefer nasogastric tube, others use NGT in the immediate phase and consider percutanous endoscopically gastrostomy. Many people say that PEG is the last option, NGT feeding is long established. I think NGT is less invasive than PEG. However, PEG feeding is better tolerated than NGT.
