A research with a new technique for measuring brainwaves was done and it showed that filtering out useless information could help people increase their capacity to remember what is important.

Researchers believe that the new findings will lead to improvement of diagnosis and treatment of cognitive problems such as attention deficit disorder and schizophrenia and of course help enhance memory.

In the study, participants were asked to remember arrays of coloured squares or rectangles, so that their brain activity could be recorded. They were asked to remember two red rectangles and ignore two blue ones. Those with good visual memory managed to keep the blue rectangles out of their heads, while the poor performers had all the rectangles in mind.

The authors of the study believe that we should train our attention in order to improve our ability to remember only what is important.
