Well I think that I got my period after being 17 days late but I'm still not sure at the moment if it is really my period. Tomorrow I can finally start taking birth control pills if it is, but there is the chance that I could be pregnant so I'm not sure if I should take them. What should I do?

TAKE a pregnancy test..

ANYTIME you are late for a period, a pregnancy test is 99% accurate.

You can start birth control pills ANYTIME, but when you start them on your period you are protected immediately =)

See I'm just not sure because I've had unprotected sex and then I was late...so thats why I'm not sure if I should start it because what if I'm pregnant? Although it seems to be my period.
