Hello all. I was doing research on my own problems when I came across this discussion board. I have a condition in which started with tingly fingers, then they began to peel and it moved to my feet. I went to the doctor who said it may be scaled skin syndrome. We found a staff infection under a small spot in my toe nail and removed it and treated it with antibiotics. The doctor said this was most likely the cause of infection. To my detriment 4 weeks later the numbness returned with mild peeling/dry skin. I went in and found I had a kidney infection and am now being treated for this. My doctor claims kidney infection has nothing to do with the scalded skin syndrome but now I'm wondering what is wrong with me. I am a normal and healthy person who got sick 3 months ago with this and cannot seem to get rid of it. I'm actually pretty scared and wondering if anyone else has been treated for this and how was it treated because I understand this is rare in adults...

looking at the pictures of scalded skin syndrome, My skin looks nothing like those. It just gets really dry, turns whitish, and peels away. I don't have any red or yellow or deep wounds like in all the pictures...I look normal once lotion is applied. Could I have been misdiagnosed?
Can anyone help my peculiar situation and give me some insight?

PS I have been tested for low iron and that is not the cause or tingling...
I also forgot to mention that my fingers look a little pruined and wrinkly before I apply lotion...Also my doctor prescribed me this laclotion, told me to soak my hands and feet twice daily and then scoff off the dead skin and apply the lotion liberally. I did this and now I have these yellow callus looking things...my doctor said its just my skin overreacting and making too much skin....arg...help! Please!

I have been trying everything. I suffered an injury to both my hands (they were gouged by the sidewalk when my dog went for a squirrel. In the winter, my hands became their normal winter dry/cracking but they haven't recovered for months. I wore bandaids for months to keep moisture in. Finally, I've started on StemEnhance which encourages stem cell release from the bone marrow--this is what repairs your body. After only about 4 days on it, I'm noticing a difference. Not so red, flaky, or itchy. My skin would get flaky and shred on exposure to air but I made it through the night and the day without that happening. Very Happy

I had a similar condition to what many of you have described, and I did something simple that has cured it that I want to share. Prescription creams from dermatologists (usually cortisone types) would make it go away, but then it would come back worse, so I stopped using them. I was able to trace the first occurence to a time when I washed my hands in a public restroom and the soap must have caused an allergic reaction with my wedding ring. It took me weeks of not wearing my wedding ring for it to go away. Then, months later, I forgot and again washed my hands with public, liquid soap. The dryness, itching, and flaking came back, but worse, and in an expanded area. This is when I went to a dermatologis and got a prescription cortisone cream, which made it worse, and last longer. Again, I couldn't wear my wedding ring for weeks, because of the swelling. A few visits to another dermatologist, and allergy tests brought no sign of allergies, but his cream made it worse, too. I was at my wit's end, as at this point about 1/3 of my hand skin would crack and bleed, itch and flake.

My osteopath suggested that I mix about a tablespoon of coconut oil with a few drops of tea tree oil, and use that. Both are easily available at a health food store. The logic is that both coconut oil and tea tree oil are anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, and more. Because this concoction is so smelly and oily, I put it on my hands, then covered them with cotton or latex gloves to do my work or sleep. I found that if I cut the fingertips off the gloves that I could go about my daytime tasks quite normally.

I was absolutely amazed to find that whatever had been causing was helped by this. My hand was noticeably better after the first night, and after a just a few days of wearing the cream at night and whenever I was home, with the gloves on, I was nearly healed.

It's now been at least a year since I did that, and my skin is giving me no problem at all.

I also want to add that Burt Bee's has a hand cream in a purple tube that had a good effect, too. If you want to try something over-the-counter first, you might try that. It is also smelly, so you'll still want to use the gloves. I would suggest using both, frankly, just because they are different and one may help the other.

Good luck!!

My hands once a year peel, untill the skin on the hands have all peeled off with only new skin, then the problem disappears.

This usually happens in the cold dry months, normally in July-August.

Really would like to know what could be the problem.

PostPosted: 08/31/08 - 23:14    Post subject: numbness and peering skin on fingers Vote now! Reply with quote

On my left hand, middle finger and also the pinky finger. It first starts out where the tip and left side of the middle finger feel numb. It will continue that way for a week or so. Then the skin starts getting very hard, like it is drying out and eventually, it sort of scabs although the scab is just that the skin in dying. I have always had this phobia about peeling skin, and therefore, at that point, I start peeling it. For the most part, the skin comes off relatively easy but because I cannot stand peeling skin I will unfortunately keep peeling until I bleed.

The same goes for my pinky finger. I was freaking out and never would have guessed that other individuals are experiencing the same thing.

I guess, I will first check with my regular doctor and maybe she will let me know what my next step will be.

It is very bothersome and it also make the nails on those fingers grow out very brittle and ugly. I hope that I will be able to get some good news. Confused

These can be symptoms of a staff infection, although usually staff infections cause a burning sensation.
