I know that gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease. I have a friend with this infection and he told me gonorrhea is caused by bacterium called Neisseria gonorrhoeae. He said this bacterium could grow and multiply easily in the warm, moist areas of the reproductive tract, including the cervix, uterus, fallopian tubes and in the urethra. Now I am worried about his so I want to hear more about this problem. Are there some serious complications this disease could provoke?

Important is to know that gonorrhea is spread through contact with the penis, vagina, mouth, or anus. Interesting is that ejaculation does not have to occur for gonorrhea to be transmitted or acquired, as many people do not know. Gonorrhea can also be spread from mother to baby during delivery, which could present a problem. Furthermore, people who have had gonorrhea and received treatment may be infected again if they have sexual contact with a person infected with gonorrhea. Problem is that untreated gonorrhea can cause serious and permanent health problems in both women and men. In women, gonorrhea is a common cause of next problem called pelvic inflammatory disease. When symptoms of this disease are present, they can be very severe and can include abdominal pain and fever. Pelvic inflammatory disease can damage the fallopian tubes enough to cause infertility or increase the risk of ectopic pregnancy. Ectopic pregnancy is a life-threatening condition in which a fertilized egg grows outside the uterus, usually in a fallopian tube, so definitely this should be prevented. In men, gonorrhea can cause epididymitis, which is a painful condition of the testicles that can lead to infertility if left untreated.
