Gum Disease and Heart Correlation

I would like to found out something. Yesterday I was visiting my dentist. He gave me an anesthesia and while we were waiting it to work we have started to talk. I told him about heart diseases in my family. Then he tells me that there is correlation between gum disease and cardiovascular diseases. I am skeptic about this statement. Is it really true?

Yes it is true. Your dentist is very educated person and he was trying to make you realize how significant oral hygiene is. There are various types of bacteria in every person's mouth. If you have periodontal disease it may cause oral bacteria to enter you bloodstream and to attack your aortic, heart and vascular endothelial cells and produce vascular calcification.
