There are many things to consider before answering your question. First of all, it depends on what symptoms you would be trying to get rid of, what you would be trying to accomplish and what kind of HRT you would be using.
There are a couple of effective HR methods. You could be using either estrogen alone or a combination of estrogen and progesterone. These hormones may come in forms of tablets, creams, gels or skin patches. The method used may depend on the symptoms you are trying to remove.
For example, if you only have trouble with vaginal dryness, you would be using hormonal cream or a ring, as there is no need for estrogen to circulate throughout the whole body and estrogen will be localized to the area of application.
Also, you could be treating symptoms with hormones or you could be taking hormones for preventing osteoporosis. Depending on the goal, you may be taking HRT long or short term.
You should work closely with your doctor and talk to him/her about your individual situation and risks and benefits. S/he should be keeping a record of your symptoms, so that they could be modifying your regime. I suppose you have asked all the necessary questions about possible risks and side effects of HRT.
It is always best to use the lowest effective dose in treating the symptoms. The results are individual!
