I had Laser done on 15th of Feb. 2008 and at first i was very concerned.
i had a very difficult time urinating weak stream, pain in my penis tip, blood, urgency, worst than before surgery, it lasted for about 2 to 3 weeks
getting a little better very slowly. However the doctor said be patient it will come around and it did. Am i happy i did this. before i was getting up at night every 2 hours was very tired during the day. was going sometimes every 1/2 hour in the day it was horrible i couldnt stand it but
now i am peeing like a racehorse, no pain, no urgency and sex life is back to normal. i recommend this to anyone having problems like mine. Just be patient after surgery and it should be great.

I am 68 years old. I had T.U.N.A. (Transurethral Needle Ablation) for obstructive B.P.H. 4 years before. The improvement had not been great and soon I had to take a Flomax capsule daily. In the last year I increased to 2 capsules of Flomax daily. Then I couldn't void and had to self insert a Foley Catheter. That night I discovered Greenlight Laser on the internet. Previously I only knew of Interstitial Laser for B.P.H. and the reviews of the procedure were not good. I went to YouTube.com and was pleasantly surprised and delighted with the videos of the Greenlight Laser PVP procedure by the Madrid Urologist Dr. Gomez-Sancha. More research picked a plum: Greenlight PVP caused minimal bleeding and could be performed on patients who were on Coumadin, the blood thinner, which I was on(for Atrial Fibrillation).

The Urologist did the usual pre-op tests including Urodynamics to make sure my problem was not due to a weak bladder. A week later I was under general anesthesia for the procedure which lasted about an hour and a half. When I woke up the Urologist told me he would admit me overnight. I had an indwelling Foley catheter and double bags of saline dripping into my bladder and out all through the catheter to prevent blood clots. I was somewhat uncomfortable (3 on a scale of 1 to 10) and was given a tablet which eased the discomfort. The next day, 24 hours post-op, the catheter was removed and I went home. I have had no trouble at all, no burning sensation, no pain, no hesitation, voiding with a strong stream and completely emptying my bladder. The only thing bothersome was that the urine was bloody. I had not expected that.

When I saw the Urologist a week later he said that the urine would be bloody for weeks until the tunnel through the large prostate heals. Till then there would be intermittent almost clearing and sudden bleeding. There might be clots. The "wound" through the prostate would heal with a crust, inhibiting oozing of blood, then the crust would fall away followed by an increased oozing of blood. "See me in 3 months!".

My internist was surprised that my hemoglobin was at normal levels. I wasn't losing that much blood at all inspite of the alarming color of my urine. The urine color faded slowly with intermittent spikes of red until the middle of the 6th week post-op when it cleared completely to the normal pale straw color. And I am still voiding as strongly as the day after when the Foley catheter was removed and without any discomfort whatsoever.

My external hemorrhoids have receded about 85%. The varicocele on the left side has shrunk about the same. Because I no longer take Avodart and Flomax, conjugal relations without Sildenafil are back.

PostPosted: 04/27/08 - 16:20    Post subject: About My TURP and Masturbation Experience. Reply with quote

I am 62 and had a TURP performed on the 2nd of April 2008 - just short of 4 weeks ago, as I write this. I had spinal anaesthesia. The theatre experience was ok and I was back in the ward in 2 hours and given some light food and drink. The catheter was uncomfortable and I was given a local injection in the penis that evening along with Panadol. Next day, the catheter was removed. I was allowed to go home the following morning as I was peeing out more than was being left in the bladder and that was good.
At home I used a plastic bottle to wee into so I could see what was being passed. It was still quite bloody of course and there was a deal of the resection particles. And it hurt for about 10 days or so. Gradually the pee has become clear and particle free. It is great to be able to pee like a 10 year old again. A WORD OF WARNING. DON'T try sexual activity too soon. I masturbated 19 days post TURP and experienced retrograde ejaculation for the first time. It hurt a bit and made myself bleed more. Then just yesterday, the 27th April, I figured I would have another go. It hurt more and bled more and particles of prostate were passed. I was sore most of the day and drank plenty of water. After a couple of pees all was clear again. I am off to see my local doctor today and I bet he tells me to forget about sexual stuff until everything is healed properly. I guess it is only common sense. I think one can get used to the ejaculate thing as time passes and there is no pain.

Smile Exclamation Idea I had greenlight lazer surgery on 5-1-08, was sent home with a catheter to remain in place for 4 days and carried a back around 24 hrs daily, small one in day, large one hanging on bed at night. MD I think did a good job, took catheter out following Monday on the 5th, used antibiotic ointment and antibiotic pills for number of days, went through 24yrs daily of urgency and dripping of release and finally after 4 days, on the 5th day, started a normal flow of urine with some past drip as a minor problem afterward. Was a pain in the ... with the MD, RN, calling often during this time. Found the comments in this site very helpful which told me something to share as an observation. My MD was very methodical, did complete biopsy to start to rule out cancer, then did uriine test ( don't know name) to assess release and bladder control, then did cystescope and showed me picutre of protate growth in the bladder at the point of release into the urethra and informed me that was appropriate for greenlight. Thinks diagnostics are key. Eugene
