Researchers from the University of Michigan conducted a survey of nearly 8,000 U.S. families and found that Having a husband creates an extra seven hours a week of housework for women and that a wife saves men from about an hour of housework a week.

If you add children into the picture, the housework split becomes even more pronounced. Married women with more than three kids have been found to spend an average of about 28 hours on housework a week. Married men with more than three kids, are doing about 10 hours of housework a week. It seems as if a desire for a large family and the identification of housework as 'woman's work' may be related.

The researchers didn’t take into account outdoor chores such as gardening, home repairs, supermarket trips and diaper changes or testing a second grader on their homework and this would certainly add a few extra hours to the women’s weekly responsibilities.

Single women in their 20s and 30s are doing the least housework while married women in their 60s and 70s are doing the most.
Encouraging fact is that compared to 1976, women are spending 9 nine hours less on housework today while men are spending about 7 hours more.

Let us hope these findings won’t trigger any anger and marital spats.
