Help! Doctor forcing me to go cold turkey from Klonopin.

I've been prescribed 2mg of Klonopin per day for the past year or so. The last month has been rough for me and I found that 2mg wasn't doing anything to keep my anxiety under control. I started increasing doses and occasionally would take up to 6mg per day. I knew I shouldn't be doing this, but I had a doctor appt within the month so I figured I'd just tell him about it and he'd advise me what to do... At my appointment he immediately told me that this was considered "abuse" and that he could no longer prescribe me Klonopin. I asked him how I would get off the medication and he said I should check myself into a hospital for 4-5 days for detox. That was the only option he gave me. I refused to check myself into a hospital. (I can't miss 4-5 days of work and tell my boss "sorry, I gotta go to detox"!)

I've come off of Effexor before (but tapered) and remember that being rather hellish. Will this be similar? What should I expect? I've read that you can have seizures, but is that actually common?
