I am responding to the two posters on this subject, even though they were posted in 2006. One was wanting to reduce the occurrence of high iron in the blood. No doubt his roommate was told by his doctor that the only way to keep the iron level under control is to "bleed out" every week for a while, then perhaps down to every month. I have two sisters who have this disease, and their medical professionals (and others I have talked to) have advised this). Being vegan may not lower the iron. There are foods they tell you to avoid, not sure what they are. He needs to confirm this with his professional, the best and quickest method to remove iron from the blood is to have a pint removed as frequently as it takes to get your blood back to normal iron without removing too much blood then maintaining so that the iron level remains stable.

To the girl whose mother has hematomacrosis, if her mother is around menopause age, this is a common time for it to "appear". Menstrual periods keep the blood levels down during young adulthood and then when the periods stop around menopause this is when it will appear. It is much more critical for men to be keeping the iron levels down than women, because often they have the keep track of it from a young age.

Please consult your medical professionals who can confirm some of my above information and help you to keep the iron levels low.
