Hemorrhoid Surgery Recovery Time

Well lets just say the bowel movements start to settle down about 6-8 weeks in settle. Its when you 1st go off of those stool softners that you start to get on a regular schedule but then about a week or so after you feel the pain come back. So I suggest Benefiber of some type of fiber pill or drink. You will have to step up the sitz baths again as well as the wipes when your at work or out. They have wipes that you can place in your pocket or purse if you are a female.
Of course evryone is different on recovery but if you feel that pain when you go or an hour after you go when your stools start to get a little thicker dont be shy in holding back from the Dr. Thats when I pumped in the epsom salt in my sitz baths. I am about a week away from 3 months from my surgery and there are still times when its tough to do something as standing. But stay focused.

Hi all, I had my surgery (removal of internal and external roids) on the 7th of Jan. 5 weeks after the op it seems things are slowly getting better.

First/second week after op I was unable to function ... the pain after BM was unberable. ( so well for the nurse in the hospital telling me that I should be able to go back to work after 1 week)
(p.s. the op costed (my medical insurance company) £2000 in a private hospital in London).

I was prescribed Voltarol (3 times a day) Metronidazole (3 times a day) Co-codamol (pain killers 2 3 times a day) a laxative and Fybogel (high fibre drinks)

Third week after the op felt slightly better and back at work. Got into a routine that seems to work for me (i.e. drink plenty of fluids; high fibre diet and timed BM (1 every other day in the evening); size bath when in pain; try not to seat too much during the day and try to walk 15/20 mins a day).

Fourth/fifth week - feel 100% OK if I do not have a BM on the day (even went for a 5k run the other day) however when I do have a BM the pain is back, not immediately but after 1-2 hours and last for about 3-5 hours.

Seen MD today, she said the wound has not completely healed, being given some more antibiotics and creams ..... not holidng much hope in a medical magic cure at this stage as more I read about it and more a speak to people who gone through this ordeal and more I have started realising that time and a good diet seems the only remedy.....

Hi, I'm from India. I had the surgery done on 13th Jan, and like everyone else, thought I'd be back in action in a week to 10 days. It's still going on! The pain continues, and what I've done to solve the problem is to take another course of antibiotic. I also use a warm decoction of myrobalan nuts (Terminalia Chebula) which I pour over the external wound. Things have improved with this. I eat a piece or raw Aloe Vera from my garden first thing in the morning after the BM. With stool softeners, BM is not a big problem. What bothers me is that the last of the sutures and skin tag has not dropped off yet. I'll update you further as I recover.

i had surgery about two weeks ago. i thought i would be up and running in no time. boy was i wrong. i had the worse bm yesterday and of course i strained and now i think i look worse down there than i did before. i've been eating fruits/vegetables and have turned into a freakin' vegetarian. but its not working. i'm such pain that most of the time i just lay in bed and cry because i just can't deal with it anymore. the doctor was not helpful at all. he's like "no pain no gain" thanks doc that's what i need. i'm pretty much terrified to eat because of course what goes in must come out. and i rather shoot myself in the foot than deal with the pain. i wish there was some relief but nothing seems to be helping. Sad

I had my surgery 2 weeks ago tomorrow. I'm still in a lot of pain and have to use gauze pads to catch the blood and oozing. I take sitz baths at least twice a day.

I can't believe my surgeon told me this was going to be an outpatient procedure. I ended up staying in the hospital for 3 days. The couldn't let me go home because I couldn't pee the first 2 days. They said this happens about 20% of the time with surgery.

I was so relieved to stay in the hospital with IV morphine, but they didn't give me enough to touch the pain. It was excruciating through the first day. To top it off, they put me in a room with a crazy old lady who kept screaming "help!" all the time. I asked to go home on day 3 to get away from her and so I could take enough pain pills (dilaudid) to put a dent in the pain.

I've been taking lots of stool softeners and that helps. But the pain and itching is still bad 2 weeks out. Fortunately, I don't have to go back to work for about 2 weeks.

Sitting is painful and I spend most of my time lying down.

I had to have this surgery because my hemorrhoids had become too painful to deal with anymore. I've had other surgeries (hysterectomy and numerous spine surgeries) and this one has been by far the most painful to recover from. If you are considering having this done, make sure you have a doctor who will give you the pain meds you need and will keep you in the hospital for a couple of days. Also, use stool softeners! I get colace OTC at Walmart and it works fine.

Had anyone found an OTC ointment that helps with the itching and pain? I'd like something that numbs it, but I still have some open wounds there and want to be careful about what I use.

i had surgery on friday and its now tuesday. my surgeon said that mine was the worse case he had seen in all the years that he has been operating so at least i felt justified in having the op. I was in such good form on saturday that i could have happily went home wondering what all the fuss was about. that was until the packing blew out with the wind. they say that people pass wind hundreds of times a day and just dont notice, well i can tell you i know every single time that i pass even the tinyest bit of wind. my neighbour called yesterday as she though that i was bieng beaten. it was a bit embarresing having to explain to her that i wasnt being beaten that i was just making a poo. i have never experienced pain like this in my life. i gave birth to to breach twins at home without pain releif and it was nothing to what this is. my doctor told me to expect six weeks off work. i am hopeful that i will be able to work from home in a couple of weeks time.

the pain is horrid, but i do hope that it will be worth it in the long run, my piles were inside and out. they caused me so much pain and discomfort. they caused marking on underwear that i always had to wear a towel. the bled often, and thrombosed on a regular basis. it interfered with my sex life, i hated my partner to see me down below because it looked awful. thank goodness for this site, the first one that i have come across where people are honest and open about this problem. i hope that it will improve, and am looking forward to showing some of the posts here to family to let them see that its not just me, but this is what its like for lots of people.

keep the chins up guys, hopefully it will be worth it in the long run.

I had this surgery on March 14th, but I began looking at this site long before. I kept reading the various posts, because I was hoping I would find someone that would provide me with some hope- that the surgery/recovery wasn't that bad. I reasoned that the only people that write things on sites like this are the ones that had bad experiences- that the people that had decent experiences don't bother to chime in. Well, the first two days after surgery, I was in pain, which I expected, but I controlled it as much as possible with the pain medication. The problem began on the third day, when I passed my first bowel movement. Like so many of you before me, I experienced horrible pain. After that, however, it got worse. That night, the pain continued, and I just cried and screamed for hours. I am 41 years old (my birthday was the day after the surgery), and my mom was with me. My mom started crying just from watching me in so much pain. I went to the ER first thing the following morning, only to find out I had developed a thrombosed hemorroid. With IV pain meds and a quickie procedure to remove the new hemorroid, I felt much better and was sent home. That night, again, I was in tons of pain. Back to the ER in the morning. Wow, did I feel like the biggest baby... Anyway, the thrombosed hemorroid had left a bunch of irritated tissue that was just as painful as the hemorroid itself had been. I ended up being admitted to the hospital for pain management for the next two days. Since then, (keep in mind my surgery was approx. 2 1/2 weeks ago) things have been improving steadily. I actually felt up to returning to work today. I firmly believe that had I not developed that thrombosed hemorroid, my overall recovery would have been ok. I am not saying there wouldn't have been pain- especially with that first bowel movement- but I think I might have been able to include myself in the "positive experience" category. I hope this post can help somebody.

It's five weeks since my surgery (internal and diseased external hemorrhoids) and I'm doing better than ever. No more excruciating pain or excessive discharge. Occasionally there is a small amount of blood or discharge, but that is part of the healing process. Keep some fiber in your diet - loose stools are the best. And keep taking the sitz baths. They really help with relaxation of the bowels as well as the discomfort.

But the hemorrhoids are gone! What a joy!

My surgeon says to NEVER read in the toilet. It's his opinion that the posture of a toilet-reader is conducive to hemorrhoid formation and growth and even if you've had them removed, you put yourself at risk of developing hemorrhoids again.

Its been since Noy 16th since I had my surgery. 2 weeks passed and I was fine. Well then about 4-5 weeks later, whamo the swelling went down and the pain got worse during my BM amd then much discomfort about an hour or 2 after that. But time passed and around 2 months after I was feeling much better. I still get discomfort once in a while if I do to much activities and such but its much better. Its April 1st and next week I start playing adult softball again.

Hi I’m 35 year-old female I had this surgery done when I was 9 months pregnant. I was so ready to have the surgery because I was in so much discomfort and constant pain. I had a great surgery experience and after surgery it was awesome. I only took 1 pain pill and follow the post op direction to the tee. I return to work the next day and I was so happy that I did the surgery. I wasn’t in any kind of pain Just a little tender and I had to be careful on how I sat down. I had a full recovery within a 1 week. I recommended this surgery to anyone who wants to have it done. It’s worth it, especially if you are in constant and discomfort pain. Just to it!!! It will be worth it at the end and you will tell yourself I wish I would have done it earlier.
