My Mohter who is 88 is having a hemroidectomy. The Dr. says there is a new procedure that is less painful. Can you tell me what the recovery is like after the surgery?

Having done the surgery, the patient stays a few days at the hospital, depending on the condition. Your mother will have to take sit bath, use stool softeners and apply ointments to the area. She could also feel the difficulty passing the urine and controlling gas and bowel movements a few days after the surgery. Also she could be having troubles passing stools due to wound that may scar and leave a small opening in the rectum and there is even a possibility that her anal area could be hurting because of the muscle contractions, this may last up to 2 weeks. While surgery usually relieves the pain, swelling, bleeding, and itching caused by hemorrhoids, a drawback to this procedure is that the incisions are made in a highly sensitive area and might require stitches, which can cause the area to be tender and painful.
There are also some other options for removing hemorrhoids, such as laser, a rubber band ligation and sclerotherapy.
