Hi! Bilirubin is a brownish yellow substance found in bile. A bilirubin test measures the amount of bilirubin in a blood sample. It is produced when the liver breaks down old red blood cells. Bilirubin is then removed from the body through the stool (feces) and gives stool its normal brown color. The most obvious symptom of high bilirubin levels is jaundice, a condition in which the skin and whites of the eyes appear yellow. Jaundice is caused by the buildup of bilirubin in the blood and skin from liver disease (hepatitis), blood disorders (hemolytic anemia), or blockage of the tubes (bile ducts) that allow bile to pass from the liver to the intestine. The bilirubin test is used to monitor the development of liver disease, such as hepatitis or cirrhosis. Determine whether there is blockage of the bile ducts. IT is also used to diagnose conditions that cause increased destruction of red blood cells, such as hemolytic anemia or hemolytic disease of the newborn.
