Women have many options to choose from to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies but none of these options seem to be safe or comfortable.
Condoms are annoying and don’t feel good, birth control pills make one moody, spot, have acne, IUD’s cause cramping and increase risks of infections and scientists have just found out that the patch increases risks of blood clots.
The results from the two last studies are conflicting. The first one revealed increased risk of blood clots in women who used the patch while the second study found no difference on risk between the patch and the pills. The Food and Drug Administration have decided anyway to update the label on the Ortho Evra birth-control patch regarding adverse reactions.
The patch's manufacturer Ortho Women's Health & Urology has released the initial results and the Associated Press conducted an investigation and found higher rates of blood clots in women using the patch. Johnson & Johnson have declared that that the blood clots were rare with the use of the patches and that they represent a potential risk of all the hormonal contraceptives out there. |
