soooscared my advice would be to talk to your instructors. I am a respiratory therapist and when i was in school (12 years ago) My instructors were very understanding. I know nursing instructors can be difficult sometimes, but they may be sympathetic and help you get through the first few weeks.

I am so thankful that I found this site before my hemm. surgery. I followed all the advice given here. (Someone has summarized it in one of the posts). The pain was as everyone says un-imaginable but I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I am feeling much better and I am at week 3. I have resumed my normal life though not yet started playing any sports or exercise. For anyone going through pains and other discomfort due to hemm. I would say its not easy to go through the recovery and it depends how much pain and discomfort you are having with the hemms. i was going through a lot of pain and it was affecting my life daily and I am thankful for opting for surgery. If I have pains like the ones I had pre op again every in my life I would opt for surgery.

i had my hemm surgery on monday, and so far have have had a couple of good days pain wise until BM, they themselves arent too bad but after pain is horrendous.
i have less painkillers now just paracetamol, & plenty of salt baths, the bleeding seems to have slowed down now too.
i find it helps to sit on a hot water bottle especially after BM, then salt bath.
i have 1 more week off work.
my surgen told me to expect 7-10days of real pain and about 6wks of discomfort but no worse than what i was experiencing with the hemms.
i am so glad i had the op, as i have had hemms for more than 20yrs, and am thinking my xmas this year will be so much better as will my quality of life.

I am 42 years old and had hemrroidectomy on June 3. I am a week out and had no idea what I was getting into. I didn't research anything on the procedure and really felt it wouldn't be that difficult.
I had surgery on Tuesday and on the following Monday I was in the doctors office with the worst pain imaginable. I really thought that I was going to die. I had no idea the pain would be this severe.
I was trying to have a BM for 2 days and had constant pain and the feeling that a 2 by 4 was trying to come out my butt. The entire time I was told again and again do not push or you will make it that much worse and the sutures would come out and surgery will be all for nothing. Finally after 2 days of severe pain I pushed with the BM and I swore I just delivered a bowling ball out my butt. Upon inspection it was a small little pebble. I was in a cold sweat, gasping for air and curled up in a ball on the floor contimplating if I could survive the next BM. The urge started again and I held it in and ran and called the physicians office and talked to his assistant. She assured me that I shouldn't have that kind of pain and that this was highly unusual and for me to come in and see them right now or go to the ER.
I went to his office with the constant pain in full swing again and he left me in the room for 20 minutes did the rectal exam and said everything was fine and that he didn't understand why I was having so much pain. I stormed out of the office thinking I had no pain tolerance was wasting his time. My husband stayed and spoke to him as I was waiting at the car and I ended up calling a friend to come pick me up.
My husband than came home with a prescription for Ativan 1mg PO TID for me being so tense. Ativan is an antianxiety medication. I still had no idea the amount of pain that should be expected with have been crying until I found this web site.
I don't have any clue what to do and I would never recommend this surgery to anyone. I want everyone to know the pain is excruciating and I had no idea what I was getting into.
Make sure you research as I did NOT and until now thought that I was losing my mind. Still waiting for the next episode and am unsure if I will live thru the next BM.

I had Hemorrhoidectomy on June 12th. It's true what others have posted here, which is painful, but not as bad as I thought. Here are some suggestions:

- Rest the first two days. Stay in bed and only get up when you have to go pee or eat.
- Clean out your system even if your doctor doesn't say to do so (although you should ask your doctor) by taking one of those over the counter drinks that makes you go. That way, since BM doesn't really occur until 2-3 days after the surgery, you wont have anything that will get impacted.
- I stayed on a liquid diet (soup/protein shakes) the day prior and the first two days. This help alot. BM wasn't as bad since nothing coming out was solid.
- Get one of those sitz bath gadgets that fit on the toilet. Someone suggested this in an earlier post, where when you have to go (BM), it is so much easier to have it on this sitz bath. It does sound nasty, but oh boy, does it feel so much better. It relaxes your muscles and passess with a bit more ease. This has been a life saver. I'd sacrifice this nastiness because I can always take a shower.
- Take your prescribed pain meds the first 3-4 days as prescribed even if you don't need it because the pain will come when it wants.
- Take those sitz baths because it will help
- I also did ice packs, it helps with the swelling.
- Try not to eat too alot of meat since that makes your poo tougher
- Take colace as prescribed
- make sure you drink a lot of water (I drink about 3Liters a day) so that you don't get constipated (percocet and vicodin sometimes makes you constibpated)
- Instead of toilet paper, use flushable baby wipes or if you use the sitz bath on the toilet it should be easier to clean up when you take a shower
- There'll be blood leaking and the panty liners that will help so you don't get them on your underwear.
- ASK YOUR DOCTOR TO PRESCRIBE LIDOCAINE CREAM!!! Helps a lot after your shower after a BM.
- Buy all the things you need before your surger.

I had my surgery 7 days ago today.

But everytime I have a BM it feels like
a 2x4 but ends up being on quarter or dime sized
I feel very nauseous, convulse and push out of my control to the point I might vomit, then a small piece or two passes

how long until that goes away, and I am passing semi normal bms

I been pushing fluids and taking 2 stool softners
and increased fiber in my diet

I had my operation 18 days ago. My experience does seem one of the better ones. I was expecting the surgeon to do banding but when he had a good look around he decided to do full surgury (without asking me first). I might have been unhappy about this but I am delighted with the results.

There was pain for a week and I took painkillers when needed. I also took stool softeners and walked. I sipped plenty of water and only ate a little. It was four days before a could manage a BM. I did this by raising my legs using a stool (ha ha) when sat on the toilet. I just waited and did not want to strain. Yes it hurt and there were hot sweats but there was a great sense of achievement when finaly did a small bm.

I aksed for a surgeon who did this operation all the time. This was my experience but your doctor knows beter than me.

18 days after the operation I have some foul smelling yellow leakage from the backside. I think this will go and in another week I should be back to normal but WITHOUT Hemorrhoids for the first time in 28 years. Result ! Cool

I had my surgery two days ago, I have had 3 c-sections and 1 hystorectomy so the pain is not a big deal to me. I chose to stop the pain meds cause they make me nautious so I am only taking the ibuprofen. Last night was so uncomfortable, I slept probably 2 hours on 2 hours off, I have the sitz bath, I have been in that about 6 times now and it does give me some relief. I haven't had a bm yet and am not looking forward to it after reading most of these strings. Can anyone suggest something for the discomfort that will not make me feel so nautious? thanks

Here I am over 8 weeks out from surgery I had May 2nd. I have been back to work and exercising etc. for a few weeks now (I had 2 weeks off, and 2 weeks of 1/2 days following surgery). Had vacation, enjoyed myself in between the annoying pain still after BM. Seems as long as I don't have BM I am mostly fine. I dread it everytime since I land up having to take ibuprofren without fail. I try and wait but it just gets to be unbearable so I still land up crying here and there. Its just sooooo frustrating!!! When people hear hemmrhoids they no doubt think what is the big deal. Of course not like I advertise my issues to many people anyhow outside family and close friends. In any case like I said much pain after BM and some leakage still with blood (GRRRR...will this ever stop!@?!?!) Also I was wondering if anyone else has experienced "excessive" moisture in that area? Its ridiculous but I just assumed it was normal, I also have gotten that knot behind anus, when I called doctors office weeks ago they told me that was normal part of where the surgeon did operation and was expected as least, certainly doesn't make it feel any better of course. Well if anyone has insight on the moisture I'd be interested...I am gonna let it ride for at least another week before calling surgeon to let them know what kind of pain I am having, I do not want to god forbid have him poking around there..I am soooo tired of that thru all I have been thru with this!

I had my surgery 2 days ago, and frankly I think everybody who wrote in saying it was the worst thing ever are just babies because I am 17 years old and had this surgery as a last resort type thing because no way would I live the rest of my life with those f@#$^&* hemmoroids. I'm not even on pain killers and I had a pretty bad 2 big clusters cut out. I wish I could take pain killers to pass the time but I'm allergic to them. Since the minute the anasthetic wore off i have been so suprised about how little pain im in. Maybe I just have a high tolerance for pain but reading all these entrees before my surgery scared me shitless because I thought it would be the death of me. However, I feel great. I peed for the first time 8 hours after surgery and had a BM last night. Wasn't the best feeling but definately not worth bitching about. I mean would you rather have this pain for 4 weeks or have these hemmoroids for the rest of your life? If you agreed to the surgery why sit here on a site bitching and complaining about the pain! Suck it up and im sure alot of worse things could have happened. Its seriously all mental. Get a grip of the pain, come to terms with it (yes it's going to be here for at least 2 weeks) and make the best of your vacation.
