Hello, folks. My close friend got pregnant and I think she is in 4th month of pregnancy. However, she experienced some itching and she went to the doctor. After running some tests, it seems she has intrahepatic cholestasis. I wonder how this condition can affect the wellbeing of future mothers. Thanks.

Hello to you too. Intrahepatic cholestasis during pregnancy is also known as obstetric cholestasis. Cholestasis means that there is decreased or even stopping in bile flowing through the bile ducts. A certain amount of bile and bile salts go into the bloodstream. Hormone and genetic factors are considered to be responsible for this condition. When we talk about wellbeing of future mothers, there is increased risk for bleeding from the womb after laboring. This condition is more dangerous for the babies. There is a higher risk for stillbirth with these pregnancies. Your friend should talk to her obstetrician about this. I hope I’ve helped a little.
