How is diagnosis of leukemia confirmed?

I wish I had some more benign topic to ask about, but I don't. CLL is something we have to deal from now on, because our 53 years old mother has been diagnosed with it. Luckily, the illness is in its early stage, so she feels fine at the moment. I would like to know how this diagnosis is confirmed later on.

Constant monitoring of blood status will show eventual changes that tell us about the progression of the condition. In the start, if there are no visible signs, doctors avoid to give any therapy, because it might provoke the early condition activation. So, the patient is basically left without any specific treatment as long as she/he feels all right.
