How often do you recommend a (gentle) cardio workout?

I'm 61, recently returned to the gym, and being investigated for probable angina. Tonight I managed to keep my heart rate in the desired range for most of the time - although it went a little high on the cross-trainer, but no pain etc.!

If I did overdo it, could it have long-term adverse effects?
