Blood pressure is an essential and normal part of the way the body works. Blood that is pumped around the body carries oxygen and essential nutrients. Because of the pumping action of the heart and the size and flexibility of the arteries that carry blood, the blood is under pressure. This is the pressure we measure and if it is not in check, we may experience severe health problems.

December’s issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that consumption of vegetables, fruits, and other plant foods reduces the risk of elevated blood pressure, while intake of meat raises the risk
A study conducted lasted 15 years and included 4300 subjects and their dietary habits at enrollment and at 15 years into the study. The reports indicate that as plant food intake rose, the risk of elevated blood pressure fell
As plant food intake rose, the risk of elevated blood pressure fell. However, as the meat intake rose, so did blood pressure. Dairy consumption did not seem to have a consistent effect on blood pressure
These results indicate an importance of greater plant food and lower meat intakes to prevent the development of high blood pressure, a major risk factors for heart disease.
