Hi, during my last gynecologist appointment after I felt pain in my vagina my doctor said that I have 3 hymenal remnants. I will have to have them removed if I want the pain to stop, apparently these remnants are responsible for the pain. Can anyone explain to me what exactly are those remnants, does the surgery hurt, and what are the possible complications from this surgery?

Hymenal remnant is the remainder of your hymen, it’s basically a stretch of tissue found in your vagina where hymen used to be. It is not unusual to find hymenal remnants and they are mostly painless. Sometimes like in your case they can be the cause of pain during the sexual intercourse or during other activities and surgery is common in these situations to prevent the pain from appearing in the future. The surgery itself is fairly simple and it is done in local anesthesia, it can last anything from 15 to 30 minutes depending on the case to case basis. You should fully recover within few days, a week at most, and you can go home right after the surgery. If you don’t like the idea of surgery there are some medications like clobetasol that can help your body to dissolve the remnant on its own. For options about your treatment you should consult your general practitioner or your gynecologist.

I just got married three months ago. I was a virgin up untill marriage. I have never had an orgasm and sex has always been painful. I have a difficult time "getting wet." I also have a discharge that's similar to a yeast infection. However, I don't have a yeast infection. I've had a pap which came back normal. Many times it hurts when we first start and then it goes away. Sometimes it begins to burn first thing and continues to burn for the entire time we have sex. It feels like my skin is being rubbed off inside. I'm thinking that my hymen is causing the pain when we first start. It's open but still there in great portortions. As for the burning, I think that I'm just not getting aroused, but I use tons of lubercant. It still hurts. Why?! The doctors told me that it shouldn't hurt even if I'm not interested or wet. They said as long as I use lots of lubercant, it should not hurt no matter the interest or wetness. Is this true? I also can't figure out why I'm having a discharge. There's no smell, and it happens the day after the burning sensation during sex. What is it? It's driving me crazy! Please some one help.

You didn’t mention how old you are. Maybe you’re just not ready to have sex.
I have a friend who has had since she was 14 or 15. For the whole first year, she didn’t enjoy it and didn’t have an orgasm. She was involved with this guy for five years. When they broke up, she had problems every time she would have sex with a guy for the first time. She never enjoys her first time. How long have you been involved with your husband? Does he have understanding for your problems?

Do you ever think about having sex with your husband?
