Hypertension Can Increase Alzheimer's Effects

Researchers found that patients who suffer from hypertension or high blood pressure can increase the effects of Alzheimer’s disease. Although Alzheimer’s is not caused by any of these two conditions , hypertension minimizes blood flow to the brain and by this increases risk of Alzheimer’s effects. It was determined that hypertension presents another stroke on patient’s brain and increases vulnerability to the effects of the disease.

It is already known that hypertension can cause heart attack, stroke and aneurysm but this new study shows that it has an impact on brain health too. Researchers are trying to prove that vascular health is of great importance to brain health as well.

Research included several groups of patient’s in the study. Part of one group was suffering from hypertension including the Alzheimer’s while the other part of the group didn’t have hypertension. The other group included normal people with hypertension and the other part without it.

MRI results showed that in both groups people who were suffering from hypertension had decreased blood flow in the brain while the lowest flow was in the patients who had Alzheimer’s along with the hypertension. Also, results showed that normal group with hypertension had lower brain blood flow than the one’s without hypertension.

Results of the study clearly indicate that by changing blood flow to the brain it may contribute to the pathology of Alzheimer’s.
