I feel lump in throat when swallow. What this could be??

Hey All,

I have a clicking too - supposedly it's my hyoid bone clicking against something which isn't a big deal. I have GERD too and had a video fluroscopy done which revealed all normal. I've been told that damage can come to the throat or hyoid from even the smallest injury as a child or adult. The flurosocopy (barium swallow) is no big deal either - it tasts funny and its a little constipating but I was good by 2 days after.

i am a 16 year old and i feel like my throte is closing up. I get scared incase it closes. I have exzemia and i think that might be the problem.
any suggestions emma

After spending 2 months being an Internet Doctor, I believe I have been diagnosed. To make a very long story short, I went to 6 doctors, 2 ENTs for a lump sensation in my throat and numbness. Clear CT of neck. I would also have a shortness of breath sensation in my throat, constant clearing of throat, dry, need to swallow but no clicking. Just feeling like things were closing in and I was going to choke on this lumpy, chunky thing. It was worse after eating and as the day wore on. After several rounds of antibiotics, being scoped several times, diagnosis of possible Lymphoma to Aids, salivary gland infection and especially GERD, I went to a prestigious University Hospital and saw a Larynx/Pharynx specialist. Within minutes, he touched areas on my neck externally and located an area on the left hand side that went crazy when he applied just gentle pressure. I guess there is a spot where a number of your nerves intersect between a horseshoe bone and piece of cartiledge. This problem I believe was festering for months after I had a cold that went to my throat. Diagnosis was inflamed nerves. I'm taking a medicine for nerve inflamation and within two days things seem to better. Supposably, this will be a long process to heal (months) as there is so much action that goes on in your neck, talking, eating, swallowing, etc. One ENT diagnosed me with GERD even though my throat was clear. I believe a lump in throat = GERD to many of them. To those of you that have "clicking", the doctor did ask me several times if I had clicking. I did not but apparently it is important in a diagnosis. After months of frustration, I believe I have resolution. I hope this can help at least one fellow "lumper" and provide a possible suggestion when you go see your Doctor.

Can anyone ease my anxiety regarding a lump in the throat sensation. I have seen one ENT doctor and they have said its GERD. Been on reflux medication and has done nothing. I have experineced this for 6 months now. I had a tonsillectomy 2 months ago and thought the "lump" feeling would go away but it hasn't. Its gets a bit better sometimes and worse at other other times.

It sometimes feels like I need to bring up phlegm and is worse first thing in the morning and sometimes feels like my throat is stuck and can't move freely first thing in the morning.

I am going to go back to the doctors next week and this is starting to take over my life and I always fear the worse too.

Any help or suggestions from any fellow sufferers or doctors would be great.

Hi All,

I've been reading the posts and I have the same problem. It feels as though I have a pill or food stuck in my throat. This has been going on for about 2 weeks now. My doctor said my throat looked irritated and I may have an infection going on. He put me on Z-Pak antibiotics and prednisone. I took the Z-pak but did not take the steroids. I also saw my Thyroid doc and she said that its a virus that affects the throat and causes the lymphatic tissue to swell and "blister" giving the sensation of a "chunky throat". My "chunks" seem to move around and sometimes it feels like its getting better other times it feels worse. My Thyroid doc had me buy Chloroseptic spray and lozenges and said to keep my throat numb to allow it to heal.

I am going to call her again because I would think by now it would be 100% better and its not. I can't keep drinking chloroseptic spray. I also have allergies and have had a lot of drainage into the back of my throat which I'm sure isn't helping.

I have also had GERD in the past and still get occaisonal Acid reflux so I'm wondering if that could be causing it. I am taking Prilosec OTC to see if that helps.
At first I thought it was my Thyroid, but its not.

I too have this lump in my throat and have for several months. I have realized that if I eat TUMS it temporarily makes it feel better. Maybe it will work for some of you as well.

I had what started as a feeling of enlarged glands under my jaw and up to my neck, just beneath the ear. Painful to say the least. Not like "OWWWW" but "Ugh, that's uncomfortable". Went to a doctor, and I had some cavities in my wisdom teeth, so I got those removed. The pain seemed to go away for awhile, and then came back.

Went to the doctor again and they gave me nasal spray and some antiacid prescription. Told me to stay away from caffiene. I'm a smoker and 28, so of course neck and throat pain makes you think "Uh oh! Cancer!"

I remembered the dentist and the doctor both looked down my throat, felt my glands, none enlarged, but the first doctor told me something was wrong with my ear and my ear has a duct (Not sure the name) that goes down the neck. During my research I read about impacted ear wax from using Q-Tips and how it could cause infection. I get itchy ears sometimes and tend to use Q-Tips to try to ease the itch. I stopped doing that, then gargled with listerine every day on top of brushing my teeth. Strangely enough the pain in my jaw went away after a couple days and laying in a hot bath (Thought it might help losen ear problems if I had any).

I honestly think it's a mild infection, combined with allergies, and I'm sure my habbits of smoking and such don't help. I think the more you poke and prod the conditions, the worse they get. I used to rub my jaw when I felt the pain but stopped doing that.

I'm going to try the anti-allergies and see if they helps the rawness.

The most likely cause of the lump in the throat is Cricopharyngeal spasm. There is not a permanent cure - it can take from weeks to months to years, but usually resolves in a month or so. Stress aggrivates it. Hot liquids mitigate it.

Some medication can help for a short while. Some ENTs advocate valium to test the diagnosis. Valium will provide temporary relief because of the muscle relaxant qaulities, but the feeling comes back. Of course, valium carries the risk of addiction.

I have the same problem going on now and I've had this problem before when I was 15 or 16. It was a oarl ulcer. The prescribed what is called Magic Mouthwash. I'm not joking it's what it actually was called. I don't remember much but that it worked and I can't wait to get my hands on some b/c I have the same problem again. However I am on vacation and can't get to a doctor. What I have been using in the mean time is Maalox which is one item in the Magic Mouthwash. For those who dont' have insurance and can't go see a doctor check out a clinic. Or if you have a pharmacy you go to a lot go ask the pharmasict if you need a script for Magic Mouthwash b/c you believe you have an oral ulcer. Good luck to you all!

I had this same sensation that there was a 'lump' in my throat that would come and go, sometimes for weeks on end. My doctor said it was due to acid reflux burning my esophagus. Turns out he was right. Since taking acid reflux medications the problem has not returned.

I feel lump in throat when swallow. What this could be??
