I also have 3 kidneys. 2 normally functioning kidneys and an additional, smaller one on the left side. I was diagnosed when I was 4 and almost died due to the fact that the 3rd kidney was working backwards and slowly poisoning me. I had surgery when I was 8 (I believe the first of it's kind) to move a tube to correct the way it worked and have not had a single problem since. I don't know much else about it since I was so young but I know that it was not possible for me to survive removing the 3rd kidney. The doctor who diagnosed me was Dr. Daley in Omaha, NE. If anyone knows about this type of disease it would be him. The only symptoms I can recall are pain behind my knees, lower back pain and I would hallucinate.

I was born with three as well, and after about 35 bladder infections by the age of ten, my mother finally started taking me to urologists to find out what was causing it, and that's how they found out. Awfully traumatic procedures for such an age, though. I started taking multiple Cranberry extract capsules per day, couldn't take baths, etc. and so they went away for about eight years. But when they started coming back at age 18, I started doing my own research in medicine in college, and now know why they occur:

It's the lack of estrogen lining in the bladder (as part of the urinary tract's immune defense) caused by the adrenal gland not putting out enough of the hormone... because estrogen is needed elsewhere in the body as well, the urinary tract gets pushed to the back of the line. Then, a minute amount of bacteria (either systemic, or introduced by sex or bad hygiene) can start reproducing in the bladder at the base (by the urethra) and if not flushed out by lots of well- diluted urine, then it can start "creeping" up the ureters. For those of us who have three kidneys, it's often that two of the three ureters come into the kidney at the same spot, and some times get squished together, causing a kink in the hose, so to speak. This makes a GREAT breeding ground for bacteria.

There is one really simple way to prevent this: Stretch a lot (yoga REALLY helps) and DRINK TONS OF WATER. The only time I get them now, is when I'm not gulping down tons of h2o and juice all day long. If you are a s*xually active woman, pee as soon as possible after every intercourse, and make sure that your partner has a freshly clean phallus, and don't use saliva as a lubricant (there are TONS of bacteria in spit!!!)

Also, Avoid antibiotics, and eat organic yogurt (Stoneyfield Farms is my fav) this promotes the growth of BENEFICIAL bacteria in the body, thus helping your immune system all around. About the estrogen... I'm working on that right now. There's not much that can be done other than taking synthetic hormones (and there's a really high associated risk of breast and cervical cancers with synthetic hormones... and who wants to take a pill that's primarily been extracted from HORSE URINE in the first place ... YUCK!) Smile

As a man, you would DEFINITELY know if you were passing a stone. It'll feel like an ancient mace weapon going through a vein (which, of course isn't a vein, it's the urethra in your phallus).

I don't often trust doctors, to be honest. They don't often stay updated on medical research unless it's shoved in their face by a pharmeceutical rep, and then it's just too biased for me to believe.

This may sound weird, but go to a REALLY good chiropractor. Not necessarily one covered on your insurance plan, and not necessary the one closest to your house: a GOOD chiropractor, one who offers other services like acupuncture and maybe even applied kinesiology.

The worst bladder infection in my life, antibiotics seemingly were doing nothing for, I went to my chiropractor, and he stuck his thumb on my right kidney (which shot pains all through my body), showing me it was in fact a kidney infection, and a couple quick adjustments later, I could feel the blood flowing back towards my kidney, and I was on the road to recovery.

Hello all, my mom was informed years ago that she also had three kidneys, she mentioned it to her best friend at the time and learned too that she had three kidneys! Well, well, well, we're all odd in one way or another... talking about reflux, I've had that almost since birth but, I am happy to report that today, I celebrated my 9th year with a healthy kidney transplant, generously donated by my father! Wishing you all the best out there and if you're going through a rough time, ask your family physician to refer you to a kidney specialist called a nephrologist!

i too have 3 kidneys. one of normal size on one side and on the other i have i full kidney with a 1/2 sized kidney attached to the top of it. i was unsually healthy as a child and regretably never missed a day of school. However, apporching teenage years i expirenced many bladder infections and at one point my urethra turned up and my urine tried backing up into my kidneys. thank god they didn't shut down. I was told that this was due to the 3rd kidney being slightly higher.

i have a constant need to go to the bathroom. it's some what rediculouse how often my bladder fills.

Hey Me TOO!!! I ALSO have three kidneys! I just turned 31 and I am of the female pursuasion. I was diagnosed as a child when I had multiple bladder infections and bladder reflux disease. I had surgery to correct the reflux disease, and I have been told that they attached the smaller third kidney to my normal left kidney. Now I am curious as to whether or not the kidney was attached by doctors, or by God...perhaps I was born with it attached to the other. Anyway, I have experienced many bladder infections in my day, as well as the extremely full bladder which seems to refill quickly even after emptying. I always joked with my husband that my third kidney was to blame, but after reading all these posts, I think that may in fact be true! I am so thankful to have stumbled upon this site. I have never known anyone else in my life to have the same affliction, or blessing, however you view it! I wanted to add that I have within the last 3 years also suffered from gall bladder disease and appendicitis...anyone else out there experience digestive difficulties? Thanks!!!

I am 40 years old & had my 1st UTI in early 2007...and then nothing until 08/2007 I have had a total of 7 UTI's and they sent me for a scan...& behold..3 kidneys?! I have 2 on the left side & 1 on the right....I am not sure if these are causing all the pain i'm having? I just had a partial Hysterectomy in December 07 & assumed that the pain was caused by the healing process....All my pain is in the lower quadrant of my stomach....anyone else having this type of pain?? The scans did show that I didn't have kidneys stones and didnt test positive this time for a UTI???? So anyone that can help would be great...not able to get an appointment with a Urologist until May Sad

We found out that my daughter has three kidneys and three uriters when she was 3 wks old. She was running a high temp so we rushed her to the emergency room. She will most likely have to have surgey on one of the uriters because it didn't attach to the bladder correctly and has formed a tumer. She is now 3 months old. Do you think she will have alot of problums through life with urenary track infection or what not?

i have just got back from the hospital after my daughters kidney scan and they said she has 1 kidney on the left and 2 on the right and one of the kidneys on the right isn't functioning properly.
she had 2 have this scan because she was rushed in hospital after having a fit! the fit was due 2 high tempreture and the tempreture was due 2 a urine infection which is why she had 2 have the scan.
i have got to wait for the doctors to ring which can take up to 3weeks.
if anyone can relate to this please do tell me what will happen next! thanks...

I also was born and live with three kidneys and I often was wondering about donation, but I am not a person that can afford the medical costs or the time off from work.So I gave up on that thought. So whats up with u how is your health. how is your quality of life.

I was born with 3 kidneys and had surgery to correct a problem with my ureters and valve closing. It stopped me frm wetting the bed. I am 45 years old and had the surgery at 6.5 years of age.
