i'm 19 and i weigh 167 and stand at 5'6 , I would like to get back weighting 140 , the weight i was before i had hypothyroidism. But no matter how hard i try or how much exercise i get i'm still not able to loose the pounds. My docter has me on meds and she says that from the blood tests they seem to be working. But i still can't loose the weight and it's driving me crazy.

I just got diagnosed Hypo and having the same problem. This is pretty much the only aspect of the Hypo that hasn't been fixed with Synthroid. I have read before if you are just on a T4 drug it sometimes helps to add a T3 drug like Armour. You might ask your dr. I have only been on Synthroid for 3 weeks so at my next appt if the weight issue does not resolve then I will ask for some T3 meds.

This is not usually what people want to hear but hypothryroidism doesn't cause a major increase in wt. Also, it takes up to 6 weeks for any t3 or t4 meds to kick in and sometimes a few weeks after that for the body to respond. I have had hypo since I was 12 (22 now) and thru the years have noticed an increase or decrease in my wt of about 10 lbs every few months to every few years. My solution - skinny pants and fat pants. My bf hates how big my closet is but he understands when he sees me desperately trying to squeeze or borrowing his belt Smile If you're really interested in your health (and I would be!) look at some books by Mary J. Shomon on amazon - used can be as low as $1 b/c hypo can cause probs with hair, skin, nails, muscles, periods, ovulation (might not release an egg) and pregnancy (down syndrome).

Um, where exactly did you learn this? My endocrinologist says that it does contribute to weight gain. Even Shomon writes that it does. When a person has hypothyroidism, weight gain is a huge symptom and this is medically proven. I was at a normal weight until my symptoms popped up at age 19 and I have been dancing and participating in sports since I was 3. I KNOW I didn't cause it by over-eating.

Um...wrong!
I spent years exercising and eating right with NO weight loss, in fact I gained weight and was overweight. I finally went to my doctor and she told me that I have hypothyroidism.
Since I started taking my medicine I have LOST weight and feel more energetic. Hypothyroidism affects your metabolism in a negative way. So when you take your meds, it kicks your metabolism back to the level it is supposed to be at.
