I had a serious slip and fell hard on a concrete floor on my butt. I hit the
floor so hard that it jarred my whole body all the way to my head. I
suffered with severe pain and I had an X-ray, MRI taken. This happened on April 24th 2006. I had previous degenerate disease with a mild bulging disc in the L4-L5 region diagnosed in March of 1999. I went to a back
surgeon then, he referred me to a neurologist because I had numbness in
the side of my lower right leg and he ran test and then referred me to a pain management doctor she prescribed Celebrex and an epidural of
cortizone (which they put me under anesthia). This treatment did not help. She then referred me to physical therapy for 2 months and I was
fine for 7 years. Never had anymore pain. Then I had the fall on the
concrete floor and have had severe pain. The X-ray and MRI taken on
May 2, 2006 was compared with the old ones from the pain management
doctor that I went to and he said that the disc is bulging more, more
narrowing of the spinal column and another problem. He said that this
was definitely related to the fall. I first was told to go to a chiropractor
for treatment and I did but it didn't help a bit. The pain just kept getting
worse so I was told to go to a pain management doctor and he scheduled
6 injections in both of my hips; (I was put under for this procedure). It
only lasted for a week and the pain came back more severe. He also
referred me to physical therapy, I went four times and I stopped it
because it was hurting too much. I suffered the past weekend with
pain that was so bad I cried. I took my muscle relaxant, pain medicine,
along with Tyelnol PM. Nothing was taking the pain away. So I went back
to the Pain Management doctor and he gave me 2 injections in my back
and hip of cortizone. He then told me that he did everything he could that
if this does not work I needed to go to a neurosurgeon specialist.
My concerns are any side effects from any of those injections. I am
bloated, retaining fluid, and having problems with having a BM. I could
go before without relying on medication to make me go, now since the
fall I have to take correctol to make me go. What I am asking is did the
fall cause the constipation, and the injections causing the bloating and
fluid retention. How soon would I get rid of the severe pain in my back
and if it doesn't work do you also recommend having surgery.
I would appreciate an answer soon. Thank you for your help

Cortisone shot can relieve pain permanently but in some cases relief is temporary. Cortisone shot usually gives pain relief within 2-3 days. Fluid retention, muscle weakness and increased sweating can occur due to cortisone shot. Also weight gain, easy bruising, and unexplained fever or tarry stools are some of its side effects. I’ve never heard that cortisone causes constipation, but it may really do. I guess that you should except to have surgery. That’s completely logical way to manage your problem. You should not be on chronic therapy with corticosteroids because of numberless adverse effects that may occur. It is possible that you have developed BM problems because of limited moving. Just don’t get addicted on corectol, eat more fruit, like prunes and drink teas that have diuretic effect.

I am so sorry you are suffering. From your information, I spotted Celebrex, and than further on, read that you had been retaining fluid.
I have been suffering as well, for 5 years for a surgery that shouldn't have happened in my back. Along the way, through hundreds and thousands of pain killers, they tried Celebrex. I'm not sying Celebrex is what caused it but going back through all my documentation, Celebrex seemed to be the only one that could have caused it. I gained over 40 pounds in less than 2 months. My legs and feet were double their original size. I began having trouble breathing, I was wheezing and didn't know what to do. The doctors kept telling me that nothing I was taking would have caused this Edema (fluid retention).
Since I quit taking Celebrex, I have returned to normal but it took a few months to get rid of all the fluid.
I hope you get well soon. If it ever seems nobody cares, Jesus does and he'll never leave you nor forsake you. If you already haven't, call on Him.
God bless
