I had cataract surgery on both eyes 5 years ago. I just had an 'explosion' of floaters in my eye last night and and now have a pink smear across my vision area along with floaters. This happened to my other eye 2 months ago. The retina specialist did not help at all. No information, no idea as to need to be concerned or not, if my vision was at risk, etc The eye that 'exploded' 2 months ago still has a light smear and floaters.

What is this, what caused it, what type of doctor do I need to go to? Is this the beginning of retina detachment?

Have you tried asking for an Optomap of the eye? Optos plc have developed a scanner which can see 80+% of the inner eye and the resulting pictures can be examined in greater depth.

Any haemorraging within the eye normally takes months to clear so if your clinician believes that this is the correct course of action I'd take his word.
