A new study shows that children who were breast-fed longer than 12 months may experience iron deficiency and learning problems.

The study included around 2000 toddlers aged one to three years and tried to see a connection between iron deficiency and duration of bottle-feeding. The prevalence of iron deficiency among all groups of children increased with the duration of bottle-feeding. A reason to this is that these children receive a lot of non-iron-fortified milk that leads to gastrointestinal blood loss and a displacement of iron-rich foods from the diet. Also, children who are older than 1 year should not be given large volumes of milk as they may experience learning and developmental disorders.

All the children should be weaned off the bottle when they reach age of 15 months.
