Irregular periods..

Hi,
Im 19 and my period does not come monthly like most women. I have never taken birth control and almost as soon as I got my period which was when I was 13 it comes about every 4-5 months, if even that. What I have noticed lately it that for the last 3 months I have gotten my period and experience cramps for the first time ever. what could this mean!
