Hello! My grandfather is diagnosed an age-related macular degeneration. His doctor said that is it genetic and because he is a heavy smoker. My grandfather doesn’t want to quit smoking and he said that the real reason for his illness is he used to take too much aspirins. We told him that he could become blind but he didn’t pay much attention to that. Is Age-Related Macular Degeneration linked to aspirin use?

Hi! Well, you were right, age-related macular degeneration (AMD) can cause blindness. Actually, researches have shown that mutation in the gene is the reason. Regular aspirin use or alcohol consumption could not be the reason for the gene mutation. Also, aspirin in usual doses can’t decrease the risk of AMD although some people used to think so. It is important for your grandfather to stop smoking. This would affect his overall health condition. If he doesn’t want to listen to you maybe you should ask for a support of an expert.
