Is Azulfidine chemically related to sulfa antibiotics?

Hello, I have allergies to sulfonamides. I am homosexual and I have been infected by proctitis, doctor prescribed me with Azulfidine. As I have heard, Azulfidine has some connection with sulfonamides, which I am allergic to. Is Azulfidine really chemically related to sulfa antibiotics? I don’t won’t to complicate my condition.

Azulfidine does belong to sulfonamides group, but its chemical structure is changed. It is a combination of 5 amino salicylic acid and sulfopiridin. There should not be any allergic reaction to this medication, but if anything happens, you should consult your therapist immediately, perhaps even stop the treatment right away. It is better than continuing the therapy.
