Is codeine known as a medicinal marijuana?

My husband is 44 years old and has been prescribed with codeine for his coughing problems. I know that it helps him and he is satisfied now, but I have heard some disturbing facts about that drug. Is codeine known as medicinal marijuana? My friends mentioned something about that and now I am worried. He is not, though.

Well, I have to inform you that codeine and marijuana are two different things. Marijuana belongs to cannabis group, while codeine is made off opium poppy plant (morphine too). But, you are well concerned. I mean, codeine is far from a mild medicament, that is why the therapy does not last longer than a week. But he is ok now, so the therapy worked.
