I am worried about my little sister. She is 13 and recently she was diagnosed with diabetes. I would like to know more about this. How dangerous it is? Will she be able to have a normal life?

I am sorry to hear about your little sister. The good thing is that she is diagnosed and that she will get a proper treatment. Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that is needed to convert sugar, starches and other food into energy needed for daily life. The cause of diabetes is a mystery. However, genetics and environmental factors such as obesity and lack of exercise play big roles. In order to determine whether a patient has pre-diabetes or diabetes, health care providers conduct a Fasting Plasma Glucose Test or FPG. They can also do an Oral Glucose Tolerance Test or OGTT. Either test can be used to diagnose pre-diabetes or diabetes. Your sister will be able to have a normal life as long as she is taking care of herself. Diabetes can be very dangerous if it is not treated, but you have nothing to worry about as long as your sister is monitored by her doctor.
