Is fluid retention linked to SLE?

Searching the Internet I couldn't find the explanation about fluid retention in people who have suffer from SLE. My neighbor is suffering from SLE for last 15 years and recently he has signs of fluid retention. What is the reason for it and how to treat this swelling of ankles and kidney problems?

Hello, yes this retention is linked to SLE due the kidney disease called lupus nephritis. With this disease, glomerulal filtration is damaged resulting in decreased kidney function. Together with fluid retention occurs weight gain and swelling. Other than swelling, there is couple of signs or symptoms of lupus nephritis which does not lead to a pain or burning during urination.
