Is it harmful to be on vegetarian diet while pregnant?

I opened a vegetarian restaurant couple of months ago and it’s doing really fine. Lot of people come in, and the menu will change by the season. Families come for Sunday lunch and their kids enjoy the meals, too. The other day we had a pregnant customer who was concerned about this kind of diet because of her condition. Is it harmful to be on vegetarian diet while pregnant?

She really shouldn’t worry. If she eats a well-balanced vegetarian diet, she’ll get all the nutrients she needs. But if her diet isn't balanced she may need extra vitamins, for example, B12, which can be found in some manufactured goods, such as soya products, or in supplements. She may also require a vitamin D supplement and should make sure that she gets enough iron in her diet as well.
