Is it possible for herbal supplements to interact with birth control pills?

Hi, folks. I am currently using birth control pills. However, since I suffer from mild depression, my mother recommends me to take some herbal supplements for my condition. I would like to know whether it is possible to combine these two things, in general. I would really appreciate it. Thanks for replying. Bye!

Hello, there. I advise you to consult with your gynecologist or pharmacist. I think that herbal supplements should be treated like other drugs. They have active substances that can interact with other remedies. For instance, St. John's wart is recommended for treating depression. It isn't recommended to combine it with birth control pills since in some cases there were bleedings reported. It is also reported some pregnancies with this combination. In that case, you will need an extra contraceptive. It will be best to talk to a doctor. Good luck!
