I'm 15 years old, and one of my close friends just got diabetes. He didn't get it from being too fat, it was something to do with genetics or whatever.

I don't have any diabetes in my genetics, but I was wondering if I was able to get the disease? I'm pretty heavy (about 235 Ilbs, and 6 foot 1 or so). The fat can't really be seen if I'm wearing a t-shirt, and I'm a big guy.

What are the chances I have diabetes?

If you have no symptoms, then it is unlikely that you have diabetes. It is either caused genetically or by diet. I usually doesn't occur until later in life. Since you are planning to eat healthier and lose some weight over the summer, it shouldn't be something you need to worry about

I'm 30 and found out i had it about 5 years ago. No one else in my family has it. My husband also has it and no one in his family has it either. So start now to eat better and lose a little weight. I know its hard to stay away from sugar but eat more fruit than refined sugars if you want something sweet. good luck.

You can not get diabetes just because your friend has it. This disease is not contractable. My ex hubby has it but his was from genetics and was encouraged because he was extremely obese for his height. 260 lbs. and 5 foot 11 inches. The best way to check for type 2 diabetes which is the form yours would likely show up in IF ANY would be to have your doctor check. I am no expert mind you but he and I were married for 9 years and he has had it for 7 yrs. His family has diabetes for several generations on both his mom and dads sides so his was inevitable. Your friend most likely has type 1 diabetes also known as juvenile diabetes. If it is something truly concerning to you talk to your parents and family physican. I hope this helps you. If you need more information on diabetes if nothing else just to be able to support your friend I would check out www.diabetes.org or any similar websites. Just remember that because your friend has diabetes does not mean he will change. Just a few things in his life. He will need a good friend right now to be there for him.

Weather or not u have diabetes. The way to control it/ prevent it; is regular exercise. This will help the pancreas control any sugar in your body.
