Hello, my son is 5 years old and he got gastroenteritis, severe form, when we were at seaside last week. We all thought that his problems were caused by the change of climate and that it would pas in a day or two. But that did not happen. Diarrhea, high temperature, nausea, loss of weight, this is all he suffers from now. Is ondansetron (Zofran) safe and effective for dehydrated children with gastroenteritis?

You should know that it is not the most popular drug when it comes to dealing with gastroenteritis. It odes prevent nausea and vomiting, but it help with these symptoms caused by radio therapy, not gastroenteritis. Your son needs a medication that will slow down the movements of the bowels and he also needs to compensate for the loss of fluid and electrolytes.
