Is promethazine used for pain or as a sedative?

I had been to a surgery recently. Doctors have worked on my chests. I feel pain after surgery. It is not so severe but it is very annoying and persistent. It doesn't let me sleep. I have mentioned that to my doctor. And he gave something he call promethazine. Is promethazine used for pain or as a sedative?

This drug you have received has various purposes. It acts as antihistamine and it is usually used in combination with some other medicines to treat cough. Also it is anti-emetic and sedative. It can treat allergy, motion sickness, nausea and pain after the surgery. So, it can be used on both of yours problems.
